MultiCare sports begin with football and volleyball

The MultiCare Foundation's annual Inter-Schools football and volleyball competitions will begin on Wednesday, while the netball competition will begin on Tuesday. All three competitions will be staged at the MultiCare Sports Complex, Breezy Castle Centre, downtown Kingston.

The competitions, which feature three age groups, will take place over two days with the 10-12 age groups competing on the first day, and the 13-15 and 16-18 age groups participating on the second day. Play will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Students are in the final phase of training in preparation for all three competitions which are open to boys and girls from the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools in East, West and Central Kingston, and Greater Portmore.

The competitions are elements of a wider MultiCare-implemented schools sports programme, which is intended to inculcate the values of teamwork and cooperation, while promoting the MultiCare fundamentals of love and respect for self and others, discipline, responsibility and self-esteem.

Edwards' strike not enough

A 13th-minute strike by Wyndell Edwards handed Donnington Primary a 1-0 victory over Albion Mountain in the Primary Schools Championship match, played recently at the James Bond Beach Complex in Oracabessa, St Mary. However, the points gained from the win were not enough to take the mountaineers to the next round.

On the netball court, Donnington Primary's girls outplayed their Albion Mountain opponents for a 5-2 win, which handed the victors a place in the play-offs.

Weekend of badminton

The weekend of the Chinese Benevolent Association's (CBA) badminton tournament continues today and runs through to Monday at Chinese Benevolent Centre.

More than 213 entries have been received for this event with a massive 64 entries in the men's Division 'D' singles. The top seeded players in the singles events are:

'B' division men - Che Beckford, and Ladies - Carla Grant; while in the 'D' Division: men - Jon-Ross Newman, and Ladies - Crystal Smith.

The finals are scheduled for Monday evening. The following weekend will see the playing of the Open and C Divisions.

Junior High school netball

Former champions, John Mills, crushed Greenwich Town 55-1 as the 2009 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)-sponsored Junior High school girls Senior League netball competition continued at the Leila Robinson Courts earlier this week.

In contrast, defending Senior League champions Windward Road, coached by Stafford Alexan-der, had to work hard for a narrow 19-17 win.

Also winning convincingly in the Senior League were Melrose, which defeated Rock Hall 32-3 after leading 15-3; Louise Bennett-Coverley, which eased past Dallas 31-19; and Cockburn Gardens, which outscored Castleton 26-4.

Meanwhile, Shortwood Practising and Stony Hill played to a 14-14 draw, while Red Hills and New Day drew 11-11.

In the Junior League, defending champions John Mills defeated New Day 18-1 to chalk up their third win from three starts; Windward Road made it three wins from three starts by beating Dallas 19-9; Mico Practising got past Melrose 12-5; while Norman Gardens edged Castleton 8-7.

Tufton football league

In action on Wednesday from the INSPORTS Dr Christopher Tufton Primary & All-Age football competition, South West St Elizabeth division, Fullerswood thrashed Slipe 8-0. Hopewell scored the day's second biggest victory, blanking Newcome Valley 4-0 at Barbary Hall. Also at Barbary Hall, Sandy Bank stopped Geneva 3-0 and Middle Quarters beat Black River 1-0 to join Fullerswood as the Zone D winners.

Excelsior domino final

Over 192 domino pairs from all 14 parishes will converge at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, University of Technology (UTech), for tomorrow's grand final of the inaugural Excelsior Championship.

The contest, set to begin at 11 a.m., will see the top pair walking away with $500,000, while the top 16 teams will receive cash prizes.

Must-win game for Ken's Wildflower

Former champs, Ken's Wildflower, are in a do-or-die match against minnows Washington CC in their final preliminary round game of the Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Portmore Cricket League at the Ken's Wildflower sports ground tomorrow. Match time 11 a.m.

Ken's Wildflower currently lie third in group A on 14 points, which is led by Reid's Pen with 20 points. However, the Development Squad (10) and second-place Belmont (16) have outside chances. Development Squad will hope Washington CC upset Ken's, but they must win their remaining matches against Reid's Pen and Washington CC. Belmont's only remaining fixture is against Reid's Pen. A win for Belmont will put them in the semi-final.

In group B, the big clash is between already qualified Ports-mouth (18) and Colours International (26), at the Bridgeport sports ground, while in a game of academic interest, Cumberland face Portmore Pines at the Hamilton Gardens ground.

Major League battle for Portsmouth

Two matches are on in the Captain's Bakery-sponsored St Catherine Major League football competition this afternoon.

Portsmouth, fresh from their 1-0 victory over Dela Vega United, battle Black Lions at the Portsmouth playing field, starting at 3 p.m., while Arlington United will host Dunbeholden at Scalette Road.
