We caught up with two 'bredrens' whose lifestyle is consumed with ensuring that partygoers have a great time at events.
How did you two disc jocks/selectors link up and how did the name Kingston Allstars come about?
Lauren Antonio (Triple X): Before Stylz and I made a musical link, I was a DJ/selector on another popular sound system alongside his cousin, Master P. It was during that time, Master P told me that Stylz was in Miami and could represent for us there, as he was also an upcoming DJ/selector. We eventually parted ways with the other members of that sound system, and when SupaStylz returned, we decided to build from there.
The name Kingston Allstars came up after we had a meeting about a new name and thought we should get something with lots of appeal, yet on the positive side. Eventually, we pieced together the names and thought, well, since we are stars and we are representing Kingston, it can work, and it did.
Daniel Moren (SupaStylz): Well, when I moved back to Jamaica from school in Florida, my cousin, which is our MC (Master P), was running the first sound. I was in from that time and we all continued working until, one day, we decided to make this into a marketable business for ourselves. And after having a meeting among ourselves, we thought, hmmm, we are based in Kingston, and we are all stars, so why not be the Kingston Allstars.
Have you gents been in any competitions or is this just a true born talent?
Triple X: Never been in a competition before because established DJ's advised me otherwise and I have always thought them to be a waste of time, a lot of biased decisions at times. But mixing and music selection are like second nature to me. I just love music.
Grew up seeing records in my home as a baby; didn't know what they were for though. One night at a friend's party, when I just left high school, the DJ didn't turn up, and I just went home for my compact-disc collection and just locked the party. People still remember that night.
SupaStylz: Well, it is a true, born talent we have, but I was once one of the 16 finalists in the Heineken Green Synergy.
Any thoughts of going international, and whom do either of you emulate or admire in the industry?
Triple X: We are already doing international shows and are gearing up for more right now. There are so many people that I give props right now, but my shortlist is Wee Pow, Supa Dups and DJ Qbert from the United States. I am just mixing it up a bit.
SupaStylz: We started as far as play-outs; I recently came back from Miami from a play-out. As it relates to persons I look up to, I would have to say, Selecta Renegade, Kurt Riley and Supa Dups from Black Chiney.
Was there any event in which your performance caused a party to 'sell off'?
Triple X: This is another hard question for me. Hmmm. I would have to say Absinthe.
SupaStylz: (Nodding in agreement) It was Absinthe 2009 Negril Dream Weekend.
Do you have suggestions of an event(s) for the Christmas season that will be worthwhile?
Triple X: Yeah, all Kingston Allstars event 'sell-off'. Once we play, you are sure to enjoy it to the fullest, so with that I recommend Bills, South Beach and Heineken Igloo as a must.
SupaStylz: Not an event, but eventssssssss. Anything that Kingston Allstars are on, that alone is a guaranteed good party.
