Former champions Garvey Maceo became the first qualifier from the inter-zone round of the 2009 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday afternoon when they handed Marcus Garvey Technical a 3-1 defeat in their Group Two game at Drax Hall, St Ann.
However, what was sweet victory for the Garvey Maceo team quickly turned to horror as after the game, irate supporters of the Marcus Garvey team attacked both their team bus and a bus with supporters, injuring several persons.
"I have never seen anything like this; we were literally running for our lives," said Garvey Maceo's coach Jeffrey Hewitt. "Some persons have been injured but I am not able to determine how many persons at this time. We are just trying our best to get out of this ugly situation."
Garvey Maceo, who now have maximum six points from two games and is assured of advancing from Group Two into the last four, got their goals from Kenroy Thomas, Miguel Howell and Durrant McLeod. Garvey Maceo were initially eliminated after the competition's preliminary round but was reinstated after Old Harbour withdrew from the competition.
In the other Group-Two game, Manchester High rebounded from their first-round loss in emphatic style, handing last year's beaten finalist Spaldings High a 4-1 defeat in their game at Kirkvine Sports Club. Jason Johnson got a hat-trick for Manchester High, who are now locked in second place in the group with Spaldings on three points.
Emphatic win
Over in Group One, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) rolled back into contention with an emphatic 6-0 win against Frome Technical at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland. In what was a dominant performance, STETHS score through Deshaun Brown (3), Denmark Gillings, Alex Graham and a defender's goal.
In the big feature Group-One clash at Jarrett Park between champions St James High and Ben Francis KO champions Glenmuir, the fans were treated to excellent display of high quality football and in the end, the final 0-0 draw seemed the ideal result. Both teams are now joint group leaders with four points.
