Kamal Powell, chairman of NYPW, described as "unfortunate" the Gaza and Gully culture being introduced to youths.

"It is unfortunate that certain sections of our society want to disturb the overall well-being of our country," Powell said.

The energised leader said young people tended to idolise perpetrators of violence because of the absence of strong parenting.

He also said poverty and low education attainment were possible reasons for the escalation of violence among youths.

The NYPW chairman said it was unfortunate that the squabble between dancehall deejays Vybz Kartel and Mavado had taken centre stage and that young people in high schools had taken it upon themselves to start their own gangs.

While noting that the squabble could be lyrical, not physical, Powell said such elements in institutions geared toward education were not welcome.

He said the NYPW would be working towards getting Vybz Kartel and Mavado engaged in a discussion to assess and solve the problem.

Powell went on to say that the NYPW would ensure crime and education, among other issues, relating to young people, took centre stage in Monday's parliamentary sitting.

The chairman was speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture on Trafalgar Road.
